Domain renewal and expiry: how it works
myPandos renews domains by invoice, not silent registrar auto-charge β here's the timeline and what to expect.
myPandos renews domains through an invoice you pay β not by silently charging a card or asking the registrar to auto-renew in the background. Here's exactly how the timeline works.
The renewal timeline
- Before your domain expires, myPandos automatically generates a renewal invoice and emails it to you. This happens a set number of days ahead of the expiry date, so you have time to pay before anything is at risk.
- You pay the invoice from your dashboard at https://dash.mypandos.io, the same way you'd pay any other invoice.
- Once payment is confirmed, myPandos renews the domain at the registry automatically and updates the new expiry date on your dashboard β you don't need to do anything else.
About the "Auto-Renew" setting
Your domain's Settings tab has an Auto-Renew toggle. This is a preference that tells myPandos you intend to keep renewing the domain β it does not authorize an automatic charge to a card, and myPandos deliberately never enables auto-renewal at the registrar level either. Whether Auto-Renew is on or off, renewal always happens through an invoice you pay. Turning it off is mainly useful if you've decided to let a domain lapse and want to stop renewal reminders for it.
If a renewal invoice goes unpaid
An unpaid invoice follows the same overdue process as any other myPandos invoice β reminders, then escalating account actions if it stays unpaid. Pay it before the domain's expiry date to avoid any risk to the domain itself.
If a domain does lapse
Domain registries use a standard set of stages after expiry, and myPandos reflects the domain's real status from the registry in your dashboard:
- Expired β the domain has passed its expiry date without being renewed.
- Auto-Renew Grace Period β a short window immediately after expiry where the domain can typically still be renewed normally.
- Redemption Period β a later window where the domain is no longer resolving and reclaiming it usually costs significantly more than a normal renewal, where the registry allows it at all.
- Pending Delete β the final stage before the domain is released and becomes available for anyone to register.
Exactly how long each stage lasts and what a late renewal costs varies by registry and isn't something myPandos controls β the safest approach is always to renew before the expiry date rather than relying on these later stages.
Tips
- Keep your account email address current so renewal invoices and reminders actually reach you.
- Check your domain's expiry date any time on its Overview tab in the dashboard.
- If you no longer want a domain, simply don't pay its renewal invoice and let it lapse β you don't need to "cancel" it separately.
